Hans Holbein the Younger, Meyer Madonna, 1528
oil on panel, 146,5x102 cm, Schlossmuseum, Darmstadt.
In the upper central portion of the painting we have the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus. This type of Madonna’s depict is a Schutzmantelmadonna, a Virgin of Pity (Lat. Mater Misericordiae) - painting or sculpture in which the Virgin Mary covers person with a mantle of protection and stands within a scallop-shell like niche (like famous Ravensburg Madonna of Mercy).
On the left we have Meyer with his two sons. On the right we have Meyer’s two wifes - first wife Magdalena Baer (died in 1511, the one with coverd chin) and Meyer’s second wife Dorothea Kannengiesser, the kneeling girl in a white dress is Meyer’s daughter Anna.
It is suppose[d that] Holbein’s mistress, Magdalena Offenburg, who posed for the Madonna.
